The Future of Work 2025
Are we returning to the office? 👀
Many major companies have decided to call their remote employees back to the office full-time starting January 2025.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy sent a note to company employees, urging a full return to the office at the beginning of 2025. This announcement has left people wondering, “Are we really going back to the office? 😱”
It seems the trend is shifting from remote work back to the office. While some fully support this return, others are adopting hybrid models or continuing to provide flexibility for remote work.
But what will employees who are accustomed to flexible work models do in the face of this change?
At Hirex, we’ve launched a series to explore how changing work models impact employees and to predict what lies ahead for employees, companies, and HR teams in 2025.
In this article, Lighthouse Research & Advisory Chief Research Officer Ben Eubanks answers our direct and concise questions in a clear and straightforward way.

1. In your opinion, will we see a greater push towards fully remote work, or will hybrid remain the dominant model in 2025?
This really comes down to the type of work and the demand for the skills. In areas like cybersecurity where talent can be scarce in some markets, remote work will definitely win out. But in other areas like marketing or recruiting where we've seen a slightly more employer-centric market, they can force the hybrid models because they have a supply of workers willing to accommodate.
2. Will companies struggle to hire skilled workers if they remove the WFH option?
Our research at Lighthouse Research & Advisory shows that when employers mention hybrid or in-person work in the hiring process, candidate ghosting immediately increases. That's a pretty compelling data point.
3. What challenges and opportunities do you think HR teams will face in this environment?
Remote learners in our research say they have to do more training on their own time and at their own direction compared to those who work in-office. If employers have people who work remotely, they have to make sure they have equitable treatment. In addition, our data on mental health indicates that while remote workers are most satisfied with the arrangement, they are also at a higher level of stress at the same time. Employers have to consider that and make sure they support their remote team members through effective leadership, helpful benefits, and clear communications.
