Accountant Job Description

An Accountant keeps a company's financial records complete, accurate, and defensible. They record transactions, reconcile accounts, close the books each month, and prepare the statements and filings that leadership, auditors, and tax authorities rely on. When the numbers are questioned, the accountant is the person who can trace every figure back to its source.

This job description template lays out the core of the role: a candidate-facing summary, a responsibilities list spanning the full bookkeeping cycle, and a requirements section you can calibrate to staff or senior level. It helps your hiring team agree on scope before candidates ever see the posting.

Publish it on job boards and your careers page, or drop it into your ATS as the opening for a structured pipeline. Swap in your software stack and reporting lines first, or let the AI generator below tailor the whole template to your company in one pass.

About the Accountant role

An Accountant manages a company's financial records and makes sure every transaction is captured accurately and on time. Accountants prepare financial statements, reconcile accounts, handle tax filings, and give managers the numbers they need to make decisions.

Depending on the size of your company, an Accountant may own the entire bookkeeping cycle or specialize in one area such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, or tax. In smaller teams, expect the role to be hands-on and broad. In larger organizations, accountants usually report to a Senior Accountant, Accounting Manager, or Financial Controller and focus on a defined slice of the ledger.

When you write your posting, be specific about the scope: which ledgers the accountant will own, which software your team uses, and whether the role supports audits or tax season peaks. Specificity attracts candidates with the right experience and filters out mismatches early.

Job brief

Our finance team keeps the whole company honest about its numbers, and this role is its backbone. You will own the ledger day to day: booking transactions, matching bank activity to the books, chasing down discrepancies before they snowball, and keeping the monthly close on schedule. Tax deadlines, vendor payments, and management reports all run through your desk.

The work suits someone who treats a one-cent mismatch as a clue rather than a nuisance. You will partner with teammates across the company who need clean numbers fast, and with our external advisors during audits and filing season. Accuracy earns you autonomy here.

Responsibilities

  • Record and classify all company transactions so the general ledger stays current and audit-ready
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and intercompany balances, and investigate anything that does not tie out
  • Drive the month-end and year-end close, including accruals, journal entries, and supporting schedules
  • Produce balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and cash reports on the agreed calendar
  • Handle accounts payable and receivable, keeping vendor payments and customer collections on schedule
  • Prepare tax computations and returns and file them ahead of statutory deadlines
  • Review financial documents and internal procedures for errors, gaps, and compliance risks
  • Brief management on financial position and liquidity in clear language, supported by the numbers
  • Support budget forecasts with historical data and variance commentary
  • Protect sensitive financial information and follow the company's data handling and backup practices
  • Apply company policy and the relevant accounting standards consistently across all entries

Requirements and skills

  • Track record in an accounting or similar finance position with ownership of real ledgers
  • Working command of GAAP or IFRS and the local rules that govern your filings
  • Daily-driver comfort in at least one mainstream accounting platform, for example QuickBooks, Xero, or NetSuite
  • Excel skills beyond the basics: pivot tables, lookups, and building reconciliation workpapers
  • Direct experience running or heavily supporting a month-end close
  • An eye that catches the transposed digit and the instinct to ask why a number moved
  • Ability to explain accounting outcomes to colleagues who do not speak debits and credits
  • Degree in accounting, finance, or a related field

Nice to have

  • Professional certification such as CPA, CMA, or ACCA, or active progress toward one
  • Hands-on involvement in external audit preparation
  • Exposure to ERP systems and finance automation tools
  • Background in an industry with sector-specific reporting rules similar to yours
