A Business Analyst sits between business stakeholders and delivery teams, translating goals and problems into clear, testable requirements. They interview stakeholders, map processes, analyze data, and document what a system or process change must do. Good analysts prevent the most expensive failure in software projects: building the wrong thing well.
The role varies by context. In a software team, a Business Analyst writes user stories and acceptance criteria alongside a product owner. In operations or finance, the focus shifts to process improvement, reporting, and cost analysis. Responsibilities
- Elicit requirements from stakeholders through interviews, workshops, and document analysis
- Write clear user stories, acceptance criteria, and functional specifications
- Map current-state and future-state business processes and identify improvement opportunities
- Analyze data with SQL, Excel, or BI tools to quantify problems and validate assumptions
- Prioritize requirements with stakeholders and manage scope trade-offs
- Work with developers and QA daily to clarify requirements during delivery
- Support user acceptance testing and verify delivered work against acceptance criteria
- Document decisions, dependencies, and open questions so nothing lives only in meetings
- Prepare reports and presentations that make findings clear to non-technical audiences
- Track benefits after delivery to confirm the change achieved its intended outcome
Requirements and skills
- Has worked as a business analyst or in a comparable analytical role
- Draws requirements out of stakeholders through interviews and workshops
- Writes user stories, acceptance criteria, or specifications that are actually testable
- Can get to the data independently, through SQL or a reporting tool
- Maps a process clearly, whether in a formal notation or a good flowchart
- Has worked alongside agile or hybrid delivery teams
- Writes well and runs a meeting that reaches a decision
- A relevant degree, or the practical experience that replaced one
Nice to have
- CBAP, CCBA, or IIBA-level certification
- Experience in your specific industry, such as banking, insurance, or logistics
- Familiarity with prototyping or wireframing tools
- Exposure to product management or product owner responsibilities
