About the CEO role

The CEO is accountable for the entire company: its direction, its results, and its people. They set the vision and strategy, build and lead the executive team, allocate capital and resources, and represent the company to investors, partners, regulators, and the public. Every other role in the business optimizes a part; the CEO answers for the whole, and ultimately to the board.

What the role demands depends heavily on company stage. A startup CEO sells the vision, raises capital, and often does hands-on work across functions. A scale-up CEO builds the executive team and the systems that let the company grow beyond founder reach. A CEO of an established company steers strategy, capital allocation, and culture through market cycles, succession, and transformation. Family businesses and investor-owned companies each add their own governance dynamics.

When writing this posting, be explicit about the mandate: growth, turnaround, professionalization, exit preparation, or succession. Describe the governance structure, who the CEO reports to, and the state of the executive team. Serious candidates will assess the board and the mandate as carefully as you assess them, so clarity here attracts stronger applicants and filters out mismatches early.

Job brief

We are looking for a CEO to lead our company through its next chapter. Your responsibilities include setting the vision and strategy, building and leading the executive team, owning company-wide financial performance, allocating capital, and representing the company to the board, investors, and external partners. To succeed in this role, you should have senior executive experience, sound judgment under uncertainty, and a record of building organizations that perform. Success means sustainable growth in enterprise value, a strong leadership bench, and a board that trusts your stewardship.

Responsibilities

  • Define the company vision and strategy, and update them as markets and evidence change
  • Own company-wide financial performance, including growth, profitability, and cash position
  • Build, lead, and continuously upgrade the executive team
  • Allocate capital and resources across functions, products, and markets
  • Report to the board, prepare it for key decisions, and execute its governance requirements
  • Represent the company to investors, banks, key customers, partners, and regulators
  • Make final decisions on major matters: strategy shifts, large investments, M&A, and senior hires
  • Shape and protect the company culture, values, and ethical standards from the top
  • Ensure the company meets its legal, regulatory, and fiduciary obligations
  • Identify existential risks and opportunities early, and prepare the organization for both
  • Plan leadership succession, including development of potential successors

Requirements and skills

  • Proven experience as a CEO, managing director, or senior executive with company-wide or full P&L responsibility
  • Track record of setting strategy and delivering results through an executive team
  • Strong financial acumen: fluent in financial statements, capital allocation, and investor expectations
  • Experience working with or reporting to a board of directors
  • Demonstrated ability to hire, develop, and part ways with senior leaders
  • Excellent judgment and composure in high-stakes, ambiguous decisions
  • Outstanding communication skills, from all-hands meetings to boardrooms and media
  • High personal integrity and a reputation that withstands due diligence
  • Degree in business or a relevant field, or an MBA; exceptional track records outweigh credentials

Nice to have

  • Experience matching your mandate, such as fundraising, turnaround, M&A, or international expansion
  • Deep knowledge of your industry and its regulatory environment
  • Experience leading through a comparable company stage or ownership change
  • Public company, private equity, or family business governance experience, as relevant
