About the COO role

A Chief Operating Officer (COO) turns company strategy into day-to-day execution. They oversee the operational engine of the business: processes, budgets, performance management, and cross-functional coordination, often with direct responsibility for functions such as HR, finance, customer operations, or supply chain. While the CEO sets direction and represents the company externally, the COO makes sure the organization actually delivers on its commitments, on time and within budget.

The COO role is famously flexible, and its scope depends on the CEO's strengths and the company's needs. In some companies the COO runs revenue operations and go-to-market execution; in others they own manufacturing, logistics, or people operations. What stays constant is the mandate: build scalable processes, remove operational bottlenecks, hold leaders accountable to measurable goals, and give the CEO an execution partner they can trust completely.

In your posting, spell out which functions report to the COO, how the role divides responsibilities with the CEO, and the biggest operational challenges the new hire will inherit in their first year. Because the title means very different things at different companies, a precise scope section will do more than any list of adjectives to attract candidates whose experience genuinely matches your needs.
