About the Python Developer role
A Python Developer builds applications and tools in Python, one of the most versatile languages in modern software. Depending on the team, that can mean web backends and APIs with Django or FastAPI, data pipelines and ETL jobs, automation scripts, or the service layer behind machine learning products. The common thread is readable, well-structured code that other people can maintain.
Because Python covers so much ground, the biggest mistake in postings for this role is vagueness. A Django developer, a data pipeline engineer, and an ML platform developer all call themselves Python developers, and they have very different strengths. State clearly which kind of work dominates the role, which frameworks you use, and what the developer will own.
Look for candidates who write idiomatic Python rather than another language translated into Python syntax, and who understand the practical side of the ecosystem: virtual environments, dependency management, typing, and testing with pytest. If the role touches data or ML systems, say so explicitly, since that shifts the required skill set noticeably.

Responsibilities
- Design and build backend services, APIs, and tools in Python
- Develop features using frameworks such as Django, FastAPI, or Flask
- Write clean, idiomatic, type-hinted Python with thorough pytest coverage
- Design database schemas and write efficient queries with an ORM or raw SQL
- Build and maintain integrations with third-party APIs and internal services
- Automate repetitive workflows, from data imports to deployment scripts
- Profile and optimize slow code paths and memory-heavy processes
- Review teammates' code and help maintain shared coding standards
- Package, deploy, and monitor services in staging and production
- Document services, scripts, and operational runbooks for the team
Requirements and skills
- Has built and shipped Python applications or services in production
- Strong in core Python: data structures, iteration, and error handling done properly
- Production experience with a framework such as Django, FastAPI, or Flask
- Solid SQL and comfortable in PostgreSQL, MySQL, or similar
- Writes automated tests as part of the work rather than afterwards
- At home with virtual environments and dependency management
- Works in Git with code review and a continuous integration pipeline
- Explains a decision clearly to engineers and to people who are not
- A computer science degree, or the practical experience that replaced one
Nice to have
- Experience with asyncio and asynchronous frameworks
- Familiarity with data tools such as pandas, Celery, or Airflow
- Experience deploying Python services with Docker on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
- Exposure to machine learning workflows or model-serving infrastructure
