A Java Developer builds and maintains applications that run on the Java Virtual Machine, most often backend services, APIs, and enterprise systems. The work centers on writing object-oriented code, integrating with databases and message queues, and keeping high-traffic services fast and reliable. Java remains the backbone of banking, insurance, telecom, e-commerce, and large-scale SaaS platforms.
The role varies with your architecture. A team running Spring Boot microservices on Kubernetes needs different instincts than a team maintaining a twenty-year-old enterprise application, and both differ from Android-focused Java work. Name your Java version, frameworks, and deployment model in the posting so candidates can judge the fit honestly.
When hiring, prioritize depth over breadth. A developer who genuinely understands the JVM, concurrency, and Spring internals will adapt to any Java codebase, while a long list of framework names on a CV guarantees little. We are hiring a Java Developer to build and maintain the services behind our product. You will write and review backend code, work with our databases and messaging, design and consume APIs, and keep high-traffic services fast enough that nobody has to think about them.
This suits somebody who cares how things behave under load, writes code the next person can follow, and would rather understand what the framework is doing than trust that it will be fine.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs in Java
- Build features using Spring Boot or comparable frameworks in the team's stack
- Write unit and integration tests with tools such as JUnit and Mockito
- Design and optimize database interactions using JPA, Hibernate, or plain SQL
- Integrate services with message queues, caches, and third-party APIs
- Profile and tune application performance, including memory and garbage collection behavior
- Participate in code reviews and uphold the team's coding standards
- Troubleshoot and resolve production issues in collaboration with DevOps
- Contribute to architectural decisions for new services and major refactors
- Keep dependencies, Java versions, and security patches up to date
Requirements and skills
- Has built backend services on the JVM in production
- Strong in core Java: collections, generics, streams, and concurrency
- Has run Spring or Spring Boot in production, not only in a tutorial
- Sound on object-oriented design and the patterns worth using
- Comfortable with relational databases and an ORM such as Hibernate
- At home with Maven or Gradle and a Git-based workflow
- Has designed and consumed REST APIs that other teams depend on
- Writes documentation and explains a design decision clearly
- A computer science degree, or the practical experience that replaced one
Nice to have
- Experience with microservices, Docker, and Kubernetes
- Familiarity with Kafka, RabbitMQ, or other messaging systems
- Exposure to Kotlin or other JVM languages
- Oracle Certified Professional Java certification or similar credential
