About the Product Owner role

A Product Owner maximizes the value a development team delivers. They own the product backlog: writing and prioritizing user stories, clarifying requirements during the sprint, accepting completed work, and making the trade-off calls that keep the team building the right things in the right order.

The role comes from the Scrum framework and lives closest to the delivery team. Where a product manager looks outward to market, strategy, and customers, the product owner looks inward to the backlog and the sprint. In many companies one person carries both responsibilities; in larger organizations, product owners partner with product managers who set direction.

In your posting, describe your agile setup, the number of teams the role serves, and how much strategic input versus backlog execution the role carries. Experienced product owners ask exactly these questions, and clarity here filters for the profile you actually need.

  • Excellent communication skills with both technical and business audiences
  • Analytical mindset: using data and feedback to guide backlog decisions
  • Availability and responsiveness during the sprint as the team's decision point
  • BSc or BA in a relevant field, or equivalent practical experience

Nice to have

  • Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) or equivalent agile certification
  • Experience in our industry or product domain
  • Technical background sufficient to discuss feasibility with engineers
  • Experience working alongside a separate product manager in a scaled agile setup
