Scrum Master Job Description

The hardest thing to convey in this posting is what the job is actually for, because the ceremonies are the visible part and the least interesting one. Teams hire when delivery has become unpredictable, when the same blockers keep reappearing, or when process has quietly grown heavier than the work it was meant to support. Say which of those brought you here.

This draft covers facilitation, coaching, and the unglamorous work of clearing obstacles. Before you edit, decide how many teams this person supports and how experienced those teams are. Coaching a group new to the framework is a different job from sharpening a practiced one, and candidates who thrive at one often struggle with the other.

Be honest about how much leadership backing the practice has. A scrum master with no authority and no sponsor spends their year losing arguments, and experienced candidates ask about this directly. Advertise in the agile communities and certification networks rather than a general board. The generator below can produce a single-team or a multi-team version of the description.

About the Scrum Master role

A Scrum Master helps agile teams work together effectively. They facilitate core ceremonies such as sprint planning, daily standups, reviews, and retrospectives, remove obstacles that slow the team down, and coach everyone involved on agile principles. Their goal is a team that delivers predictably and improves continuously, sprint after sprint, without burning out or drowning in process for its own sake.

The role is servant leadership rather than command and control. A strong Scrum Master protects the team from scope churn and interruptions, surfaces impediments early, and uses metrics such as velocity and cycle time to spark honest conversations rather than to police output. They also work closely with Product Owners to keep backlogs healthy and priorities clear, and with other Scrum Masters to coordinate dependencies across teams.

In your posting, describe how many teams the Scrum Master will support, your delivery framework, and the tools you use for backlog and sprint management. Candidates also want to know how mature your agile practice is and how much leadership support it has, because coaching a team new to Scrum is a very different job from refining an experienced one.

Job brief

We are hiring a Scrum Master to help our teams deliver predictably and improve as they go. You will run the ceremonies, clear the obstacles the team cannot clear itself, protect them from churn and interruption, and coach everybody involved on how the framework is meant to work.

This suits somebody who leads without authority and would rather ask a good question than issue an instruction. The measure is a team that ships steadily, raises problems early, and gets a little better each sprint without drowning in process.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate sprint planning, daily standups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives
  • Identify, track, and remove impediments that block the team's progress
  • Coach team members, Product Owners, and stakeholders on Scrum values and agile principles
  • Protect the team from mid-sprint scope changes and unnecessary interruptions
  • Work with the Product Owner to keep the backlog refined, estimated, and prioritized
  • Track metrics such as velocity, cycle time, and sprint predictability and make them visible
  • Drive continuous improvement by turning retrospective outcomes into concrete actions
  • Coordinate cross-team dependencies and communicate risks to stakeholders early
  • Foster a culture of psychological safety, ownership, and sustainable pace

Requirements and skills

  • Has served as a scrum master to software teams, not only attended the ceremonies
  • Knows Scrum deeply, and knows Kanban and the scaled frameworks well enough to borrow from them
  • Facilitates ceremonies and workshops for teams at very different levels of maturity
  • At home in agile tooling such as Jira, Azure DevOps, or Linear
  • Reads the dynamics in a room and coaches individuals without holding authority over them
  • Handles conflict and stakeholder pressure without passing either on to the team
  • Uses delivery metrics to start conversations rather than to police people
  • A certification such as CSM or PSM, or demonstrable expertise in its place

Nice to have

  • Experience coaching multiple teams or supporting an agile transformation
  • Background in software development, QA, or another technical discipline
  • Familiarity with SAFe, LeSS, or other scaling frameworks
  • Experience working with distributed or remote-first teams
