Sales Representative Job Description

A Sales Representative is the person who turns interest into revenue. Reps find potential customers, learn what problems they are trying to solve, present the right solution, negotiate terms, and close the sale. In many companies, a rep is also the first human contact a future customer ever has with the brand.

This job description template gives you an editable role summary, responsibility list, qualification criteria, and preferred extras. It helps your hiring team agree on the sales motion, quota expectations, and skill bar before the posting goes live, so interviews stay consistent with what you advertised.

About the Sales Representative role

A Sales Representative sells your product or service directly to customers: finding prospects, understanding their needs, presenting solutions, negotiating, and closing deals. Reps are the engine of revenue growth and often the first human contact a customer has with your company.

Sales roles differ sharply by motion. Inside sales reps work the phone and video calls from the office, field reps visit customers in their territory, and B2B reps manage longer cycles with multiple stakeholders. State your motion, average deal size, and quota expectations clearly so candidates can judge fit.

The best reps combine persistence with genuine curiosity about customer problems. In interviews, look for structured prospecting habits, honest talk about lost deals, and consistent quota attainment over multiple periods rather than one great quarter.

Job brief

Every deal on our board starts with a rep who picked up the phone, asked a sharp question, or followed up one more time than the competition did. We are hiring a Sales Representative to do exactly that: work a territory of prospects and existing customers, understand what each one is trying to fix, and match them with the product configuration that actually solves it. You will carry a quota, manage your own pipeline in the CRM, and get real coaching instead of a script.

The reps who do well here are organized, honest with their forecasts, and quick to turn a lost deal into a lesson. If that sounds like how you already sell, we want to talk.

Responsibilities

  • Generate new opportunities through outbound calls, personalized email sequences, and social selling
  • Qualify prospects by digging into their needs, budget, and buying process before proposing a solution
  • Run product presentations and demos that map directly to each customer's situation
  • Weigh a prospect's costs against expected value so your proposal solves a real problem at a defensible price
  • Grow trusted, long-running relationships with both new accounts and the existing customer base
  • Negotiate pricing and terms within company guidelines and resolve objections along the way
  • Deliver against your quota on the agreed timeline, with a forecast you can stand behind
  • Maintain clean CRM data: activities logged, stages current, and next steps defined for every deal
  • Work hand in hand with marketing, customer success, and fellow reps so accounts get a joined-up experience
  • Watch competitor moves, market shifts, and recurring customer feedback, and bring those insights back to the team
  • Invest in your own development through coaching sessions, call reviews, and sales training

Requirements and skills

  • Prior success in a quota-carrying sales role, with results you can walk through in detail
  • History of hitting or exceeding sales targets across multiple periods
  • Persuasive communicator who negotiates with confidence and listens more than talks
  • Comfortable managing pipeline and activity inside modern CRM platforms
  • Quick to build credibility and rapport with new contacts at every level
  • Disciplined about planning your week, prioritizing accounts, and protecting selling time
  • Able to shape a pitch or presentation around what a specific audience cares about
  • Receptive to coaching and serious about improving between quarters
  • High school diploma required; a business-related bachelor's degree strengthens a candidacy

Nice to have

  • Experience selling in our industry or to our buyer persona
  • Familiarity with sales methodologies such as SPIN, MEDDIC, or Challenger
  • Experience with outbound sequencing tools
  • A second language relevant to your markets
