Responsibilities
- Transport freight safely over assigned routes while meeting delivery schedules
- Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections and report defects promptly
- Load, secure, and verify cargo, and confirm counts against shipping documents
- Maintain accurate hours-of-service records using electronic logging devices (ELDs)
- Plan routes and fuel stops with attention to traffic, weather, and delivery windows
- Communicate with dispatch on delays, route changes, and delivery confirmations
- Comply with all DOT and FMCSA regulations and company safety policies
- Complete delivery paperwork, including bills of lading and proof of delivery
- Keep the truck clean and report maintenance needs before they become breakdowns
Requirements and skills
- A valid commercial licence for the class this route requires, with a clean driving record
- Has driven commercially, on comparable routes and equipment
- A current medical certificate and able to pass screening
- Knows the hours-of-service rules and works the electronic logs properly
- Secures loads correctly and completes inspections rather than signing them
- Reads routes, delivery instructions, and shipping documents accurately
- Reliable, safety-first, and professional with customers at the dock
- Able to lift and handle freight where the route calls for it
Nice to have
- Endorsements such as Hazmat, tanker, or doubles and triples
- Experience with refrigerated, flatbed, or oversized loads
