About the Database Administrator role

A Database Administrator, or DBA, keeps an organization's databases fast, available, and safe. They install and configure database systems, tune queries and indexes, manage backups and recovery, control access, and plan for growth. Since databases hold the data a business cannot afford to lose, the DBA carries some of the highest-stakes responsibility in any IT team.

The role shifts with the platform and deployment model. A PostgreSQL or MySQL DBA in a cloud-native company spends more time on automation, replication, and managed services, while a SQL Server or Oracle DBA in an enterprise often focuses on licensing, clustering, and supporting many internal applications. Name your platforms and whether they run on-premise, in the cloud, or both.

Modern DBA roles increasingly overlap with data engineering and site reliability work, so state where you draw the line. Be explicit about on-call expectations, the size and criticality of the databases involved, and whether the DBA will also advise developers on schema design and query performance, which is where great DBAs add the most value.
