About the Dental Assistant role

A Dental Assistant keeps the treatment room running smoothly. They prepare patients and instruments before procedures, assist the dentist chairside by passing instruments and managing suction, take dental X-rays, and sterilize equipment between appointments. Their speed and reliability directly determine how many patients a practice can see in a day without compromising the quality of care or the infection control standards patients expect.

The role also has a strong patient care and administrative side. Assistants calm nervous patients, explain post-procedure care, update dental records and clinical charting, and often help the front desk team with scheduling, recalls, and insurance paperwork. Depending on state regulations, assistants with expanded functions may also take impressions, place sealants, or polish teeth under the direct supervision of the dentist.

In your posting, list the certifications your state requires, such as radiography certification or CPR, and state whether you need an expanded functions assistant. Also mention the practice management software you use, the specialties you cover, and your typical working hours, since many assistants choose jobs based on schedule fit and the chance to build skills in a particular type of dentistry.
