About the Pharmacist role
A Pharmacist is the last checkpoint between a prescription and the patient. They review orders for accuracy, screen for drug interactions and allergies, dispense medications, and counsel patients on how to take them safely. In most settings they also administer immunizations, manage controlled substance records, handle insurance rejections, and supervise the pharmacy technicians who do much of the physical preparation and data entry.
The day-to-day work varies considerably by setting. Retail pharmacists balance high prescription volume with patient-facing services and insurance troubleshooting, while hospital and clinical pharmacists work with care teams on dosing decisions, IV preparations, and medication therapy management. Across all settings, pharmacists carry the legal responsibility for every medication that leaves the counter, so precision, focus, and current clinical knowledge are non-negotiable.

- Handle insurance claims and resolve rejections and prior authorization issues
- Ensure pharmacy operations comply with federal, state, and local regulations
- Supervise, train, and schedule pharmacy technicians and support staff
Requirements and skills
- A pharmacy doctorate from an accredited program
- A current pharmacist licence in good standing where this pharmacy operates
- Has practiced as a pharmacist in a retail, hospital, or clinical setting
- Thorough on interactions, dosing, and medication safety
- Knows pharmacy law and the controlled substance and privacy obligations that attach to it
- Works confidently in pharmacy management and dispensing systems
- Immunization certified, or willing to become so
- Exact and steady in judgment when the counter is busy
- Explains a medication clearly to a patient who is not a clinician
Nice to have
- Residency training or board certification such as BCPS
- Experience with medication therapy management programs
- Experience supervising technicians or managing a pharmacy
- Fluency in a second language common in your patient population
