About the Nursing Assistant role

A Nursing Assistant, often a Certified Nursing Assistant or CNA, provides hands-on daily care to patients under the supervision of licensed nurses. They help patients with bathing, dressing, eating, and mobility, take vital signs, and keep rooms clean and safe. Because they spend more time at the bedside than anyone else on the care team, they are often the first to notice a change in a patient's condition.

The role demands physical stamina, emotional resilience, and genuine compassion. A strong nursing assistant treats every patient with dignity, communicates changes to nurses promptly and accurately, and follows care plans exactly. In long-term care, they build lasting relationships with residents and families. In hospitals, they keep units running by answering call lights, turning patients, and supporting nurses during procedures. The best assistants stay calm and kind even on the hardest shifts.

In your posting, specify the care setting, whether hospital, skilled nursing, assisted living, or home health, along with shift patterns, patient-to-CNA ratios, and your state's certification requirements. Candidates in this field weigh workload and support heavily, so be transparent about ratios and lifting equipment available on the floor. Note any tuition support or paths to LPN or RN training, since career growth is a major draw for strong candidates.
