About the Dental Hygienist role

A Dental Hygienist provides preventive oral care and is often the clinician patients see most during a visit. They perform cleanings, remove plaque and calculus, take and develop dental x-rays, screen for gum disease and oral cancer, and apply preventive treatments such as sealants and fluoride. They also review medical histories, update patient records, and flag anything that needs the dentist's closer attention during the exam.

The role combines clinical skill with patient education. A strong hygienist puts anxious patients at ease, explains what they are seeing in plain language, and coaches patients on home care habits that actually stick. Hygienists work with significant autonomy inside their licensed scope, managing their own patient schedule while coordinating closely with the dentist on treatment planning and periodontal care.

In your posting, specify your practice type, whether general, periodontal, or pediatric, along with the patient volume per day, the equipment and software you use, and your state's licensure and anesthesia certification requirements. Hygienists compare schedules closely, so state the appointment length you allot for a standard prophylaxis. Salary range and benefits matter too, since licensed hygienists are in short supply in most markets.
