A Caregiver helps people who cannot fully manage daily life on their own, whether because of age, illness, disability, or recovery from surgery. Responsibilities
- Assist clients with personal care, including bathing, grooming, dressing, and toileting
- Help clients move safely around their home, including transfers and mobility support
- Prepare nutritious meals that respect dietary needs, and assist with feeding when required
- Provide medication reminders and record whether doses were taken on schedule
- Perform light housekeeping such as laundry, dishes, and keeping living areas safe and tidy
- Accompany clients to medical appointments, errands, and social activities
- Provide companionship through conversation, games, walks, and shared activities
- Observe and report changes in the client's physical condition, mood, or behavior
- Keep simple daily care logs and communicate regularly with family members or care coordinators
- Respond calmly to emergencies and follow the agreed escalation plan
Requirements and skills
- Has provided care, as a caregiver, home care aide, or in a comparable support role
- Knows personal care, hygiene, and how to transfer somebody safely
- Physical stamina for lifting, transfers, and long periods on your feet
- Patient and empathetic, and careful with a client's dignity
- Dependable with a schedule, because a client is waiting on it
- Communicates clearly with families and care coordinators
- Willing to complete background checks and to provide references
- First aid training, plus any caregiver certification required where this role is based
Nice to have
- Experience with dementia, Alzheimer's, or other memory-care needs
- Training in mobility equipment such as hoists, wheelchairs, and walkers
- A valid driving license and a clean driving record for client transportation
- Cooking skills adapted to special diets, such as diabetic or soft-food meal plans
