Product Marketing Manager Job Description

Say early whether nobody has held this job here before. A first hire defines the function, argues for its existence, and does everything badly for a while because there is too much of it. Somebody joining an established team inherits a lane. Both are good jobs; mixing them up produces a bad first year.

The draft below covers positioning, launches, research, and enablement. Before you edit, describe the product, the buyer, and where you want the focus in the first six months, because this role can be pulled in four directions at once and the strongest candidates will ask which one you actually mean.

Say how close the role sits to customers, since win-loss interviews and research access are what separates real positioning from repackaged feature lists. Ask candidates for messaging they wrote and what happened to it. The generator below can produce a launch-focused, enablement-focused, or category-building version of the description.

About the Product Marketing Manager role

A Product Marketing Manager connects what a product does to why customers should care. They own positioning and messaging, plan and run product launches, research customers and competitors, and equip sales teams with the narratives and materials they need to win. When a product is strong but the market does not seem to get it, product marketing is usually the missing piece.

The role is deeply cross-functional. A strong PMM works with product teams on roadmap narratives, with marketing on campaigns, with sales on enablement and objection handling, and with customers on win-loss and research interviews. They translate features into customer outcomes, keep competitive intelligence fresh, and choose their words carefully, because messaging compounds across every channel and every conversation that reuses it.

In your posting, describe your product, your buyer, and where the PMM will focus in their first six months: product launches, sales enablement, competitive positioning, or building awareness for a new category. Also clarify whether this is your first product marketing hire or an addition to an existing team, since the scope, autonomy, and expectations differ enormously between those two situations.

Job brief

We are hiring a Product Marketing Manager to make the market understand why our product matters. You will own positioning and messaging, plan and run launches, keep our view of customers and competitors current, and give sales the narratives and materials they will actually use.

This suits somebody who writes precisely, since messaging compounds through every channel that repeats it, and who is comfortable working across product, sales, and marketing without owning any of them.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain positioning and messaging for the product and its key features
  • Plan and execute product and feature launches across marketing, sales, and success teams
  • Conduct customer research, win-loss interviews, and competitive analysis to inform strategy
  • Create sales enablement assets such as decks, one-pagers, battlecards, and demo narratives
  • Partner with content and demand generation teams on campaigns that reflect the positioning
  • Write and review website, email, and campaign copy for message consistency
  • Track competitor positioning, pricing, and launches and keep internal teams informed
  • Define launch success metrics and report adoption and pipeline impact
  • Collect market feedback and channel it into product roadmap discussions

Requirements and skills

  • Has done product marketing, or a closely adjacent role, with results to point at
  • Has planned and run launches that landed rather than merely happened
  • Writes excellently, from a positioning document to customer-facing copy
  • Has run customer, market, or win-loss research and turned it into a decision
  • Builds enablement material that sales teams use instead of ignoring
  • Works comfortably across product, sales, and marketing leadership
  • Measures whether a launch and a message actually worked
  • A marketing or business degree, or the equivalent in practice

Nice to have

  • Experience in B2B SaaS and marketing to buying committees
  • Familiarity with frameworks such as jobs-to-be-done or the April Dunford positioning approach
  • Experience with pricing and packaging projects
  • Familiarity with tools such as HubSpot, Salesforce, or product analytics platforms
